As the nights draw in Police and the panel remind householders that darkness can provide extra opportunities for thieves. We urge people to think about home security and what can be done to deter any opportunist thieves.

Consider lighting your home when you are out, leave a few lights on or install timers to come on periodically in addition, it is worth considering installing outside security lights.

It is important to remain vigilant by locking all doors and windows. Any vehicles should be left secured with no valuables left inside. Also remember to leave house and car keys out of sight so that they cannot be easily stolen. Opportunist thieves are just that, they look for easy targets.

Keep an eye out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours as they are all to often the victim of these offenders. Most importantly, please report any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood. It is no good expecting others to report matters, we all hav ea place in our society and it is up to all of us to protect the vulnerable and to ensure that the perpetrators of crime in its many forms are brought to justice. So you make that call to the local police on 675191 or people can give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact Midlothian antisocial behavior hotline on 0131 271 6677.
